SPIRITUALITY OF THE CROSS:This Lenten season, we will be using Dr. Gene Edward Veith’s 1999 book The Spirituality of the Cross as the basis for our Midweek Lenten worship services.
In the New Testament, the word "spiritual" almost always refers to the kind of life that Christians possess because the Holy Spirit indwells and influences them. "Christian spirituality," then, is life lived by, in, and through God's Spirit.
Today’s "spirituality" is akin to worldview. In this sense of "spirituality," there are Zen Buddhist as well as Shinto "spiritualities"; and different Christian traditions: Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Calvinist, Methodist, among others. Each has its own "spirituality," arising from its own “take” on Christian faith and life. In our modern context, some would even say that their “spirituality” is disconnected from any religion, thus, you may have even heard people refer to being “Spiritual without being ‘religious.’”
Following Veith’s book, our series will trace the "spirituality" of historic Lutheranism and how this spirituality necessarily leads us to the cross of Christ: in both the book as well as in our Holy Week services (Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday).
